THIS PLACE THAT PLACE

Our first assignment was to jot down our first impressions.

I wrote down appealing, strange and a bit challenging.

It is a painting with a big contrast in it, the left green and fresh looking part, and the right dirty looking slums.

It is funny how the artist has used the same sound all the time: 'this place, that place', but uses different words all the time - although the meaning stays the same the wordplay is different than i've seen before.

Later, we got some information about the writer, she lived in different places, for example in India, probably the right side is a slum in India. The left part will probably be in another country, the US, or Europe maybe.

Poster Manson/King

This is a poster against discrimination, but we first only got to see the 2 pictures and connect adjectives to them, this made us very much aware of how many preconceptions we already have by only seeing a picture.

The man on the left is Martin Luther King, and important historic figure. The man on the right is Charles Manson, a criminal who has murdered several people.

The text on the poster really shocked me: Martin is 75X more likely to be arrested by the police than Charles, all because he has A DIFFERENT SKIN COLOUR.

It makes me angry that even nowadays racism is ordinary business in the US, I thought we finally got over that, but it seems we don't have.

I am aware this poster is maybe exaggerated a little, but this message that must be spread is very clear! I don't think it will really change anything in society, but maybe it makes people aware a little more, even if its just a few seconds...
